The first documented mentioned of strawberries are indeed in ancient Rome literature for its medicinal use. Their sweet taste and vibrant color made strawberries one of the popular fruits throughout history. Nowadays, most strawberries we consume in Hong Kong are from the United States, mostly from California. 

3 Reasons You Should Love Strawberries

1. Better Skin

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that can prevent free radical damage to your skin cells. It actually boosts collagen production, leaving your skin soft and wrinkle-free. Wait. So how does that related to strawberries? Vitamin C is not only found in orange-colored food. Did you know that only 8 strawberries contain more Vitamin C than an entire orange? 

2. Protect Your Heart

Strawberries are one of top 3 foods on the antioxidant chart! Indeed its bright red color is the source of a group of antioxidant called anthocyanins, which have been shown to help prevent heart disease and lower the risk of cancer. It is even interesting to find studies that showed people who eat strawberries have lower LDL cholesterol (the bad kind)!

3. Appropriate for People with who have blood sugar concern

Strawberries taste sweet! One cup of strawberries only provide 50 calories, comparing that to a 200-calorie found in one cup of white rice. Plus, strawberries have low glycemic index, meaning that they won’t cause a surge in blood sugar after being ingested. So don’t worry, you can still enjoy strawberries after meal if you have blood sugar concern.
 

Choosing the Best Strawberries At The Store

Because strawberries stop ripening after they are picked, be sure to find ones that are red with green tops and avoid ones that may have yellow patches. Most strawberries come in a clear plastic container so always check to make sure the strawberries are free from mold and not overly ripened (dark red and too soft). In general, some people also believe that medium to small strawberries taste the best.
